  112. PRINCIPALITY OF SEBORGA.  I1RBJ called the DXCC Desk this morning to
  113. say that he had returned from the ITU, and that under agreement with
  114. the ITU and the Italian government, he would now be using the
  115. callsign IS1A/0S1A.  This station will be on this weekend.  QSL via
  116. I1RBJ.  Also, 3A2LF/0S0C will operate CW only on 25 July.
  117.  
  118. Amateurs are reminded that there is currently no DXCC status for
  119. this one.
  120.  
  121. The principality of Seborga is located 20 km north of Monaco and is
  122. 517 meters above sea level. The principality was established on 20
  123. August, 959 AD. It is about 5 square km in area, and currently has
  124. 300 inhabitants.
  125.  
  126. SVALBARD.  Tom, LA4LN, will sign JW4LN, and Magne, LB3RC, will sign
  127. LB3RC/JW from August 1 to 20.  This is a scientific expedition and

  133. CROATIA.  Jacky, F2CW, has been working for the Red Cross in Croatia

  136. sporadic SSB.  RTTY, PacTOR and AmTOR operations are in the works.

  139. BAHAMAS.  Chuck, KG9N, will be signing his call /C6A from the island
  140. of Abaco.  Plans include being active in the North American QSO
  141. Party.  He will operate primarily on CW 25 kHz up from the band
  142. edges, but listen for his SSB on 14195 kHz at about 0300z daily.

  144. LIECHTENSTEIN.  Members of the PI4COM Contest Group will sign
  145. HB0/PA3ERC July 17 to 24. Ops PA3ERC, PA3BBP, PA3EWP and PA3GBQ plan
  146. to be on 160 through 10 meters with CW, SSB and RTTY.  QSL via
  147. PA3ERC.

  149. SOUTH KOREA.  Del, HL9DC, an American from Ohio, is active from
  150. Wonju, South Korea.  His length of stay is unknown.  He was heard
  151. recently on 14025 kHz around 1200z.  Also check the bottom of 40
  152. meters between 1100 and 1200z.  QSL via N7RO.

  154. ARUBA.  Hiro, JR4PMX, Jun, JH4RHF, and Kumiko, JR4DUW, plan to be
  155. active for one week starting August 24. Jun will sign P40S and
  156. Kumiko will sign P40YL.  Listen for them on all MF/HF bands with
  157. their CW, SSB and RTTY.  QSL via their home calls.

  235.              Solar activity was very low. The largest flare reported
  236.        since yesterday was a B1/SF at 21/0453Z in Region 7757
  237.        (N12E08). This region has changed little. Other regions were
  238.        quiet.

  240.             Solar activity forecast:  solar activity is expected to be
  241.        very low. Additional small flares in Region 7757 are possible.

  243.             The geomagnetic field was unsettled to active at most

  370. Good morning. It's Sunday the 24th of July and here is the GB2RS news
  371. broadcast, prepared by the RSGB and intended for all radio amateurs and
  372. short-wave listeners.
  373.  
  374. First the headlines:-
  375.  
  376. The new packet rules are clarified,
  377.  
  378. The very last chance to nominate the Young Amateur of the Year,
  379.  
  380. And we have some awards news.
  381.  
  382. A number of packet radio operators have asked for clarification of how
  383. the RA's new unattended operation rules will work in practice. Briefly,
  384. it is now necessary for anyone operating an unattended digital station
  385. to notify their local RIS office of that operation, and to inform them
  386. of how the station can be closed down in an emergency. This could
  387. include the telephone numbers of neighbours, or the whereabouts of an
  388. external mains switch.
  389.  
  390. The full wording of the new regulations, including the improved licence
  391. conditions for the 1.8 and 50MHz bands, is published in the August
  392. edition of Radio Communication which will be posted to all RSGB members
  393. this week. Non-members who would like a free copy should telephone RSGB
  394. Headquarters on 0707 659015 and ask for the Marketing Department.
  395.  
  396. The deadline for nominations for the Young Amateur of the Year is next
  397. weekend. If you know of anyone under the age of 18 who could qualify for
  398. this prestigious award, contact RSGB Headquarters urgently for an
  399. application form. Full details of the award and its rules can be found
  400. in the April edition of Radio Communication or from RSGB HQ.
  401.  
  402. Jack Brooker, G3JMB, has received an RSGB award for confirmed contacts
  403. on 10GHz with stations in 15 locator squares. This is only the second
  404. such award to be issued.
  405.  
  406. Two short-wave listeners have also received notable 50MHz awards: Bob
  407. Treacher, BRS32525, has been awarded the RSGB 200 squares certificate.
  408. And Netherlands listener, Jan Steenbergen, NL213, has been awarded a
  409. certificate for 140 countries confirmed.
  410.  
  411. Also on 50MHz, Robert Tweddell, G1RST, has gained the RSGB Senior
  412. transmitting certificate for 60 counties and 20 countries confirmed.  He
  413. also has a Standard certificate for 40 counties and 12 countries,
  414. endorsed: 'All auroral contacts'.
  415.  
  416. Details of the RSGB VHF and UHF awards can be found in the RSGB Call
  417. Book or may be obtained from the VHF Awards Manager, Ian Cornes, G4OUT
  418. whose address is correct in the Call Book.

  420. The Orkney two-metre repeater, GB3OC, will be going off the air for a
  421. thorough overhaul on Friday the 5th of August. The estimated time to
  422. carry out the work is about two months. For further details contact the

  456.   "Not-Invented-Here" attitude and partly due to Tesla's unusualy firm belief

  512. Now the rallies we know of for today, Sunday the 24th of July:

  514. The Colchester Radio and Computer Rally is being held at St Helena
  515. School, Sheepen Road, Colchester, adjacent to the Colchester inner
  516. bypass.  The event, which opens at 10am, has trade stands featuring a
  517. wide range of radio and computer items, a car boot sale, an RSGB book
  518. and information stand and a bring and buy stall. RSGB Morse Tests will
  519. be available on demand, but remember to bring two passport size
  520. photographs. Talk-in will be on 2 metres, channel S22.
  521.  
  522. The Humber Bridge Amateur Radio Rally is being held at the Exhibition
  523. Centre, Freightliner Road, off Clive Sullivan Way, Hull. The site has
  524. easy access and is one mile from the bridge. Doors open at 11am, or
  525. 10.30 for disabled visitors. The event features a bring and buy stall.
  526. Refreshments will be available and talk-in will be on 2 metres, channel
  527. S22.

  529. We know of only one rally for next Sunday the 31st of July:

  531. The Rugby Amateur Transmitting Society sixth Annual Rugby Radio Rally is
  532. to be held at the BP Truckstop on the A5, some 2 miles North from
  533. junction 18 of the M1 motorway. The rally starts at 10am. The truckstop
  534. will be open for catering and other facilities throughout the day.
  535. Talk-in will be on 2 metres, channel 22, by GB6CBS. Further details from

  538. Now for the HF contest news:

  540. The Russian DX Contest is scheduled to take place from 2100 UTC on
  541. Friday the 29th until 0900 on Saturday the 30th of July on 3.5 to 28MHz,
  542. excluding the WARC bands. See June RadCom page 20 for full details.

  544. The Islands on the Air (IOTA) CW and SSB Contest runs next weekend from
  545. 1200GMT on Saturday the 30th for 24 hours on 3.5 to 28MHz. See March
  546. RadCom page 92 for full details.

  548. Next some VHF contest news:

  550. The RSGB 432MHz Low Power Contest take place today, Sunday the 24th,
  551. from 0800 to 1400UTC. It features four entry sections: single operator
  552. fixed, single operator portable, all others and Listener. See April
  553. RadCom page 80 for details.

  555. The fourth RSGB 10GHz Summer Cumulative Contest takes place from 0900 to
  556. 2100 UTC, next Sunday the 31st of July. April's RadCom page 82 has
  557. further details.

  559. The Doncaster 70 centimetre repeater GB3DV on 433.025MHz, channel RB1,
  560. was returned to service on Friday the 15th of July. For further details
  561. and/or reports regarding the repeater, contact G4LUE whose address is
  562. correct in the RSGB'93 Call Book.

  564. Special event stations active this week include:
  565.  
  566. GB4GS which will be aired from the Goodwin Sands, WAB square TR45,
  567. tomorrow, Monday the 25th, by members of the Radio Club of Thanet.
  568. Operation will be on 80 and 40 metres, from approximately 0815 UTC,
  569. depending on the tide. Another operation is planned for Friday the 12th
  570. of August.

  572. GB5AC, Air Cadets and GB5ATC, Air Training Corps, will be operational
  573. from town of Ayr during the RAF Display being held this weekend. They
  574. will use 40 metres SSB and 2 metre FM on channel S21, until 6pm, today
  575. Sunday the 24th.

  577. The Air Training Corps will also be active as GB4ATC, G3ATC and G8RT at
  578. the Royal Tournament, held at London's Earls Court throughout this week.

  580. GB4SFC will be aired by the Peterlee Amateur Radio Club for the
  581. Cleveland Scouts "Friendship 94 Camp" at Ripley Castle, North Yorkshire.
  582. The event takes place from Friday the 29th of July to Saturday the 6th
  583. of August, during which some 1500 Scouts, many from around the world,
  584. are expected to be attending. Operation will be on all HF bands, CW and
  585. SSB and packet on 2 metres. Visitors will be most welcome. For further

  589. And now the solar factual data:
  590.  
  591. The period from the 11th to the 17th of July has seen the passage of a
  592. coronal hole but, in the main, solar activity has been moderate. There
  593. was a B4.4/SF flare on the 13th and the X-Ray flux has risen to
  594. reasonably high levels. The overall geomagnetic activity continues to
  595. decline. Sunspot indices have been high reaching 101 on the 12th, the
  596. highest count since last March. The period meaned at 80. A B4.4/SF solar
  597. flare on the 13th pushed up the solar flux which averaged 82 units. The
  598. 90 day flux average on the 17th was 80 units. The geomagnetic levels
  599. have been affected by the passage of a coronal hole which raised levels
  600. up to a sub-storm level of 26 units from the 15th to the 17th. Up to the
  601. 15th it was very quiet with levels down to only 2 units. The period
  602. averaged Ap 13.7 units. The state has been 'nil nothing to report'
  603. throughout the period.
  604.  
  605. The daily aa Indices, as supplied by the British Geological Survey for
  606. the 5th to the 11th of July, have been mainly quiet with periods down to
  607. only 2 nanoTeslas. The only unsettled day was the 7th, with periods up
  608. to 59 nanoTeslas. However, the average of the daily indices for the
  609. period was 13.6 nanoTeslas, about K2. The X-Ray flux has risen to quite
  610. high levels reaching B1.1 on the 15th and 16th with the period averaging
  611. a level of A7.8 units. The monthly average geomagnetic Ap for June was
  612. 15 units. The smoothed level for December 1993 was 17.6 units.

  614. I'll repeat the figures. Spots - 80; Flux - 82; Ap index - 13.7; X-ray
  615. flux - A7.8.
  616.  
  617. We regret that a technical failure on our telex link has resulted in the
  618. absence of the ionospheric data this week.

  620. And lastly the solar forecast:
  621.  
  622. This week, the more active side of the sun will be looking our way.
  623. Solar flux levels are expected to be about 85, with geomagnetic levels
  624. possibly up to sub storm with an Ap of about 25 units. Ionospheric MUFs
  625. are expected during daylight to be about 21MHz in the south, but
  626. northern stations may be affected by the geomagnetic activity. Darkness
  627. hour levels are expected to be about 14MHz.

  632. Wednesday morning, the latest callsigns issued were in the G0 Victor
